The Aztecs were a people who built a great city in the valley of Mexico, where Mexico City stands now. Their own name for themselves was closer to Mexica; Aztec is the name that came through Spanish. In the early 1500s, Hernán Cortés and the Spanish army — with help from other local peoples — brought their empire down. School books often mention gold, huge stone buildings, a difficult calendar, and religion that included killing humans as an offering. All of that is true, though actually the story is bigger: they farmed in a clever way on lake gardens, they ran a huge market, and their language, , did not die with the empire. Millions of people in Mexico today have this history in their family, and some still speak . In English, Aztec is both a noun (the Aztecs) and an adjective (Aztec gold, Aztec temples). People also stretch it a bit, calling any old Mexican-looking design “Aztec,” even when it is not.
