AZT is a medicine first used widely in the 1980s to treat people with AIDS. AIDS is the late, very serious stage of HIV, a virus that attacks the body’s defences. The letters stand for azidothymidine; the same drug also has a more official name, zidovudine. AZT does not make HIV go away. It slows the virus down, and today doctors almost always give it with other HIV medicines, not on its own. In everyday English, people still say AZT when they talk about that early AIDS treatment, especially in news or stories about the 1980s and 1990s. It is medical English: you will hear it in health news and history, not in ordinary chat.
