A garden bush that produces a mass of large, flowers in spring — pink, white, red, purple, orange. Its flowers are funnel-shaped and often cover the whole plant at once, so a single azalea in bloom looks like a ball of colour. Some kinds lose their leaves in winter; some keep them.
The word names the plant and, loosely, the flower too: 'She picked an azalea.' will tell you azaleas are really a subgroup of — put them in the same genus — but almost nobody says '' when they mean the smaller, thinner-leaved, spring-flowering kind. In shops, in gardens, and in speech, azalea and are treated as two different plants, and that is fine.
They are strongly associated with spring festivals: campuses, parks, and put on azalea displays, and people go specifically to see them. students will already know the flower well even if the English word is new. One practical thing worth knowing: azaleas are poisonous to eat, for people and for cats and dogs.
組成Borrowed from the scientific Latin name Azalea, which Linnaeus took from Ancient Greek azaleos 'dry', from azo 'to dry up'. He believed the plant liked dry soil — as it happens, most azaleas prefer moist soil, so the name records an old mistake rather than a fact.
