    An old-fashioned or dialect way of saying "yes," still heard in Scottish, Irish, and some British English, and used by sailors — "aye aye, captain" means "yes, understood." It's also the word used for a "yes" vote in formal meetings: "the ayes have it" means the yes votes won.
