An awning is a sheet of cloth or other material that sticks out from a wall, a shop front, or a tent to keep sun and rain off the space below. Picture the coloured roof over a café’s outdoor tables, or the flap over a shop window. It is usually fixed on one side and held out by or arms; many can be rolled up when the weather is kind. Though actually the first English uses, in the early 1600s, were on ships — a cover against weather on deck — and only later did the shop-and-house meaning become the everyday one. People also say canopy for some of the same covers, but a canopy can hang over a bed or a path; an awning is typically that stretched or sheet on the outside of a building or tent. It names a physical thing. You do not stretch it much as a metaphor.
組成English picked this up in the 1600s, first as a sailors’ word. It comes from an old French word for a sloping roof (auvans / anvant), and that French word likely comes from a Gaulish word for the eaves of a roof: an intensive prefix plus a word for a peak or horn. English later treated the shape as if it were awn + -ing.
