An awl is a small hand tool with a sharp point, used to push holes through leather — and sometimes through thick cloth or wood — before someone or puts in a stitch. and leather workers keep one close. It is not a knife: it does not cut a long line. It is not a powered drill: you push it by hand, and the point does the work. You will meet the word in workshops and in older stories more than in kitchen talk; if you never make shoes or belts, you may never hold one. There is no polite or rude version. It is simply the name of the tool.

組成An old Germanic name for this tool. English took it from Old English æl. Later the spelling was pulled a little toward another Old English word, awel / awul, which also meant this pointed tool. Dutch aal and German Ahle are cousins from the same family of words.
