An avocado is a fruit with thick green or dark-purple skin, soft green flesh inside, and a large round seed in the middle. People eat it in salad, on toast, or mashed. It is not sweet like an apple; it is rich and soft. In shops in Taiwan you will see it with the other fruit. Younger people eat it a lot, often as a “healthy” food. The colour avocado is a dull yellow-green, named after the flesh. Though actually the English word travelled a long way: from Latin American Spanish avocado, from an earlier Spanish aguacate, from āhuacatl, the old name for this fruit. The first English mention is in a 1696 list of plants from Jamaica.
