If you are avid about something, you do it a lot because you really want to. An avid reader is always in a book. An avid fan does not miss a match. It is stronger than interested and warmer than busy: it says you like it. You will nearly always hear it before a noun — avid collector, avid . Newspapers love it. Though actually the old Latin idea behind it is closer to hungry or greedy. In today’s English that sharp edge has mostly gone; we keep it for keen hobbies, not for taking too much food. It is not related to flying words like aviation, even though they look similar at the start.
