Averted usually appears in two situations. (1) With 'eyes' or 'gaze' — 'she averted her eyes' means she quickly looked away, often out of shyness, guilt, or to avoid seeing something upsetting. (2) With a bad event — 'the crisis was averted' means something bad was successfully stopped from happening, just in time. Both meanings share the idea of turning something away before it happens or continues.
