Avebury is a village in Wiltshire, in the south of England. People go there for a huge ancient stone circle — big standing stones put up thousands of years ago, in the late Stone Age. The strange and lovely thing is that the village sits inside the circle: houses, a pub, a road, all among the stones. The bank of earth around it, the henge, covers a wider space than the famous stones at Stonehenge, which is not far away. You can walk right up to the stones; they are not kept behind a rope the way Stonehenge is. Nobody alive today can say exactly why people built it, though actually that not-knowing is part of why visitors still come. Say it roughly AYV-buh-ree, not a-VEE-bury.
