In the old stories of King Arthur, Avalon is a holy island. After Arthur’s last battle, he is taken there. Some stories say he was buried there; some say he sleeps and will come back. People often place it near in southwest England, and the town is happy to keep the story. Though actually, nobody can point to Avalon on a real map — it belongs to legend, not to a ticket you can buy. The name comes from Latin Avallonia and insula Avallonis, from an old Celtic word for apple tree; Welsh still has Afallon. You meet Avalon in books and films, and as a pretty name for hotels, shops, and songs. It is a place-name from story, said with a little wonder, not the name of a country.
