Extra, helping, or backup — something that supports the main thing but isn't the main thing itself. In grammar, 'auxiliary verbs' are helping verbs like 'do,' 'have,' and 'will' that work together with a main verb. Outside grammar, you'll see 'auxiliary power' (a backup generator) or 'auxiliary staff' (extra brought in to support the main team).
