Autonomous means able to act and make decisions on its own, without being controlled by someone else. You'll often hear it describe machines, like an 'autonomous car' that drives itself without a human driver. It can also describe a country, region, or group of people that governs itself and makes its own laws, even while technically part of a larger country.
