Authoritarian describes a person, government, or style of running things that strictly forces people to obey a set of rules — especially rules that feel wrong, unfair, or not open to question. An authoritarian government wants control: less free speech, less argument, more “do as you are told.” An authoritarian parent or boss is the same idea on a smaller scale: orders, not discussion. The word is stronger than strict. Strict can still be fair; authoritarian usually carries a critic’s judgement, as if power is being used too heavily. It is used in news and political talk, and also in ordinary complaints about a teacher or manager. As a noun, an authoritarian is a person who believes in or practises that style. It does not mean “someone who knows a lot” or “someone you should listen to because they are an expert” — that is authoritative.
