Authentication is the act, process, or result of proving that something is true, real, or genuinely from the person it claims to be from. If is the verb, authentication is the noun: the checking itself. In everyday life that can mean proving a painting is not a copy, or proving a document was really signed by that person. In computers — and this is where students will meet the word most — authentication is the step where a system checks that you are you, before it lets you in: password, , face, or a second code on your phone (two-factor authentication). It names the process, not the permission that may come after.
