Auschwitz was the largest Nazi camp of the Second World War, in occupied Poland. When people hear the name, they think of the Holocaust: the planned murder of Jews, and also the killing and suffering of Poles, Roma, and many others. More than a million people died there, most of them Jews. Though actually it was not one single camp but a group of camps near each other; the part called Birkenau is where most of the killing happened. Auschwitz was the German name for the nearby town that Poles call Oświęcim. The German name is the one the world uses for the camp, and it has become a word for that extreme cruelty and sadness, not just a point on a map.
