The natural light show that appears in the night sky near the North or South Pole, caused by particles from the sun hitting the Earth's atmosphere — called the 'aurora borealis' (northern lights) or 'aurora australis' (southern lights). In old or poetic English, 'aurora' can also just mean the light of early dawn. It's also used as a girl's name.

An atmospheric phenomenon created by charged particles from the sun striking the upper atmosphere, creating coloured lights in the sky. It is usually named australis or borealis based on whether it is in the Southern or Northern Hemisphere respectively.
