An auk is a of cold northern waters. It is black and white, with short wings, and from far away it can look a little like a small penguin. Though actually it is not a penguin. Penguins live in the south and cannot fly. Most auks can fly, even if they look in the air; they are much more at home diving under the sea for fish. They come to land mainly to breed on cliffs. There used to be a large auk that could not fly. People hunted it until none were left, in the 1800s. In old books “auk” may mean that lost bird. Today it usually means the living group — birds like the puffin and the razorbill.

組成The word came into English from Icelandic álka and Old Norse alka, an old northern name for this bird. Swedish still has alka; Norwegian and Danish have alke. Scholars trace it further back to a very old word for a kind of bird, and some connect it with words for swans in other languages, but that meeting is far back.
