Augusta is the capital city of Maine, a state in the northeast of the United States. It sits inland on a river, not on the famous rocky coast, which surprises people who think a New England capital must be a port. It is a small city, and many Americans have never been there. Though actually, when people hear “Augusta” they often picture a different place: Augusta in Georgia, the city of the Masters golf tournament. Those two cities only share a name. The Maine Augusta is the one with the state government. The name comes from Latin Augusta, the feminine form of Augustus. Most places called Augusta were named for British royal women, not for the Roman emperor himself.
