An auger is a tool for making a round hole. One kind is for wood: a metal shaft with a screw at the end, so it pulls itself in as you turn it. Another kind is for the ground: farmers and builders use a bigger auger to bore into soil, for fence posts or to take a sample of earth. There are even huge augers on machines that drill wells. The word is also used as a verb, to auger, meaning to bore a hole with this tool, though the noun is what you will meet first. It is a workshop-and-farm word, not an essay word. It has nothing to do with August, or with (a sign of the future), even though the spellings sit close together.
組成From a rebracketing of Middle English a nauger, heard as an + auger. That nauger comes from Old English nafugār, literally “nave spear”: nafu (the nave, the hub of a wheel) + gār (a spear) — a drill for the hole in a wheel hub. The n moved onto the little word an, and the tool lost its n.
