1. 1

An audiotypist is a person whose job is to listen to recorded speech and type it as letters or other documents. Someone speaks into a recorder — a boss speaking a letter, a doctor speaking notes — and the audiotypist plays that recording, often through headphones, and types what they hear. The work needs careful listening, fast accurate typing, and a feel for how spoken English should look on the page: full stops, names, the polite shape of a letter. It is a workplace word, a little more British than American, and it belongs to the years when offices ran on dictation machines and audiotape. Many workplaces now use software that turns speech into text, so you will meet the word more in older job ads than in new ones. It is not a person who types while listening to music; the audio is the work itself.
