1. 1

An audioguide is a small talking you carry in a museum, an art gallery, or a similar place. As you walk, it plays spoken information about the objects or paintings in front of you — what they are, who made them, why they matter. Older audioguides were machines you rented at the door, often with numbered buttons to match numbered exhibits. Many places now put the same idea in a phone app, or they lend you headphones. It is not a person. A human guide walks with you and can answer questions; an audioguide is recorded, so everyone hears the same words, and you can go at your own speed. You will also see audio guide (two words) or audio-guide. They mean the same thing. The one-word form is a little more like a product name; the two-word form is very common on signs.
