Attila is the English name of a king of the Huns, a people from the wide grasslands of Asia, who lived in the fifth century (about 406 to 453). He attacked large parts of the Roman world, took land and gold, and became famous in later telling as violent and cruel. People still use the name, half in joke, for someone fierce and hard to stop, but first it is a person's name, not a job title. English took it from Greek Attíla. What it meant in his own world is not settled. The old schoolbook story says it may be East Germanic, like Gothic for little father (atta, father, plus a small-making ending). A newer idea (Bonnman-Fries, 2025) looks to a Yeniseian language and a meaning like quite swift, quite fast. Scholars do not agree, so it is honest to keep both on the table and not pretend the cute little father line is proven. English once had its own form, Old English Ætla, which this borrowed name replaced. Though actually, a lot of the monster picture comes from Roman writers who feared him; to his own people he was a king. Ordinary English says AT-ih-luh.
