Attaboy is a warm little shout: well done — you did it. People say it to a boy, a man, or a male dog after something went right: a goal, a trick, a hard job finished. It can stand alone (Attaboy!) and it can be a noun: an attaboy is that pat-on-the-back kind of praise (He got an attaboy from the coach). It began as That's the boy! said so fast the words stuck together. You hear it in American English, especially from parents, coaches, and people talking to pets. It is friendly and spoken, not a word for a school essay. Though actually, to a grown man at work it can sound old, or a bit like you are talking to a child or a dog. There is attagirl for a girl or a female dog. If you are not sure, well done is safer and kinder to everyone in the room.
