An atrium is a large open space inside a building, often with a high ceiling, sometimes made of glass, letting in a lot of light — you'll see them in modern office buildings, hotels, or shopping malls, usually near the entrance. The word also has a medical meaning: the heart has two atria (that's the plural), the upper chambers of the heart that receive blood before it moves down into the lower chambers.
