Asunción is a city in southern . It is the country’s capital, its largest city, and its main port, sitting on the River . If you only know South America through Brazil and Argentina, this is the quieter neighbour in between — though actually ’s whole political and business life still turns around this one city. The name is Spanish. It comes from asunción, “Assumption”: the Catholic feast that remembers Mary being taken up to heaven. The city was named for that feast, not for a person called Asunción in the English way. English writers often drop the mark over the ó, but it is the same place, not a different one. You will meet the word in geography, news, and travel, not in everyday chat in Taiwan.
