An astroturfer is a person who helps make it look as if lots of ordinary members of the public like a product or support a cause on their own, when really a company or a political group is paying for, organising, or inventing that noise. The practice is ; this word is the person doing it. You meet it in news about and advertising, not at the dinner table. It is AstroTurf (the fake grass) plus -er (the one who does the thing) — a joke against “grassroots,” which means support that really grows from ordinary people. Though actually, people on both sides like to throw this word at the other side, so in a fight it can mean “I do not trust those voices,” not a fact a court has proved.
