An astrophysicist is a scientist who studies the physics of stars and other things in space: what they are made of, the heat and light they give off, and the forces that pull them together or tear them apart. The field is astrophysics; this word is the person. The work sits between astronomy (what is out there) and physics (the rules of matter and energy). You meet the word in universities and science news, not in everyday chat. Though actually, the title and “” overlap a lot in real life — many people wear both hats, and departments do not always keep the line tidy.
