"Astronomical" describes anything related to astronomy, the science of stars, planets, and space, like "an astronomical observatory." But the word is used constantly in everyday speech a different way: to describe a number or amount that is extremely, almost unbelievably large, like "the price of the house was astronomical." This everyday sense grew out of how huge distances and numbers are in space.
