Astrakhan is a kind of fur — tightly curled, usually black or grey — long used for coats, collars, and hats. The curls look like many tiny shiny locks packed together. The name comes from the city of Astrakhan in southern Russia, where this fur was . The real fur comes from very young lambs; though actually, a lot of what shops call astrakhan now is a thick curly cloth made to look like the fur, not the animal skin. You will meet the word more in older books, costume notes, and old-fashioned fashion than in everyday talk. Younger people may never say it. When the word is the city, we write Astrakhan with a capital A.
