Asthma is a long-term condition of the lungs. From time to time the tubes that carry air get tight, swollen, and sticky, so breathing becomes hard. A person may wheeze (a thin whistling sound), cough, feel tight in the chest, or get out of breath — after running, in cold air, with dust or smoke, or when they have a cold. It is not a you catch from someone the way a cold is, though a cold can set an attack off. It is very common, including in children. Many people live ordinary lives with an , a small device you breathe medicine from. An attack can still be dangerous if it is not treated, so “I have asthma” is ordinary medical English, not a rare or old-fashioned word. Doctors have not replaced it with a newer everyday name.
組成From Greek ἆσθμα, “hard, panting breathing.” Middle English wrote it asma. In the 1500s people added th in the spelling to look more like the Greek — but we still do not say the th.
