Asterix is the small, clever Gaul in a French comic set in ancient times. He is short, with a big and a helmet, and with his large friend Obelix he keeps fighting the Roman army — mostly for laughs. A magic potion makes him strong; the stories mix real Roman history with food, village jokes, and travel. The French name Astérix was built from their word for (the * mark), then bent to sound like old Gaulish names ending in -rix, which meant ‘king’. So on the page he is a little star-king. Though actually, English speakers often type Asterix when they mean , the mark. That is a different word; this one is the cartoon hero.
