An assignation is a secret meeting, especially with someone you are in a romantic relationship with — or wish you were. The word has a slightly old, storybook flavour: lovers slipping out, a note, a side door. Though actually, today people mostly use it with a smile or a raised , not as a serious diary word. Newspapers still like it for a politician caught meeting someone they should not. It is not your Tuesday lunch with a colleague. In ordinary talk people say “a secret meeting” or, less kindly, something blunter; assignation keeps a little perfume of old novels, which is why it often sounds humorous even when the meeting is real.
