An Aspie is a person with Asperger’s — used especially by people who have it, as a short, in-group name, the way a nickname can feel less heavy than a doctor’s label. It is informal. Inside the community it can sound warm or simply practical; from the outside it can sound nosy or cute in the wrong way, so many people who do not have the condition avoid it. Though actually, doctors in many places no longer give “Asperger’s” as a separate name: it has been folded into the autism spectrum. Some people who once said Aspie now say autistic instead; others keep Aspie because that is the word they grew up with. It names a person, not a joke and not a medical test.
