    An aspidistra is a tough indoor plant with long, broad, pointed green leaves that rise from the soil. English speakers, especially older British ones, kept it in dim hallways and sitting rooms because it is hard to kill — people also call it the cast-iron plant, though that nickname is friendlier than aspidistra, which sounds a bit Victorian and stiff. You still see the plant; you do not hear the word much in young people’s English, unless someone is being old-fashioned on purpose, or talking about a certain kind of respectable, slightly gloomy home. It is just the plant. It is not a flower you cut, and it is not a tree.
