Asphyxia is dying — or coming very close to dying — because you cannot breathe. Doctors use it: smoke in a fire, a blocked airway, a baby who cannot get air at birth. It is a serious medical word, not an everyday one. Though actually, the old Greek idea was “the pulse has stopped,” not “no breath”; English moved the meaning onto breathing. In ordinary talk people say could not breathe or suffocation. Asphyxia can name the state, not only the death: someone may be rescued from asphyxia.
