An aspersion is an remark or an unfair judgment that puts dirt on someone’s name. You almost always meet it in the set phrase cast aspersions — to throw this kind of remark at a person or their work. It is formal, a little old-fashioned, and rather severe. Though actually, the word first meant a , as with water; the picture of “ dirt on someone” grew from that. People do not use it for a simple rude word in the street. Casting aspersions is usually something you accuse other people of doing. The usual pattern is “cast aspersions on…”
