An aspen is a tree whose leaves shake and flicker in even a small wind. The stem of each leaf is long and flat, so the whole tree seems to — people say quaking aspen for that. The famous groves grow in western North America and turn bright gold in autumn. Though actually, close cousins grow in Europe and Asia too; English just uses aspen most often for this kind. You meet the word in nature writing and in place names (Aspen is also a town in Colorado). The wood is light. It is an ordinary tree-name, not a rare scientific one.
