Ashgabat is the capital of , in Central Asia, and it is also the country’s largest city. It sits in the southwest, near mountains and the edge of a desert. Older English books often call it Ashkhabad — same city, older spelling, closer to the Russian form. Visitors talk about its wide white-marble buildings and many fountains; some say the centre feels planned and strangely quiet. In English you will only meet it as a place-name. It is not used as a common noun.
阿什哈巴德(土庫曼首都;舊拼法 Ashkhabad 也是這座城)
組成Borrowed from Turkmen Aşgabat, from Persian išq-ābād, literally “city of love”: išq is love, ābād is a settled place or city. Some historians think it was first named after Ashk (Arshk), founder of the Arsacid dynasty, and that the “love” reading is a later folk story. Scholars do not all agree.
