An ashcan is a bin for rubbish — what American English also calls a garbage can or a trash can. The word is mainly US, and it sounds a little old now; younger people are more likely to say trash can. Though actually the first ashcans were for ashes from coal and wood , which houses used to make every day. The name stuck, and then it came to mean any rubbish bin, not only a can for ash. People also stretch it as a verb in informal American English: to ashcan a plan is to throw it away. You may meet “the Ashcan School” in art class; that is a special name for some painters, built from this same “messy bin” feeling.
