ASD is the short form of autism spectrum disorder — you will also see autistic spectrum disorder; people mean the same broad idea. Doctors use it for a range of ways a person’s brain may work with social life, talking and listening, and repeating patterns or very strong interests. Spectrum is the important piece: it is not one box. Some people need a lot of daily help; some live and work with little help; many are in between. On school papers and clinic letters you will see the letters ASD. It is a medical and school word, not a joke and not an insult. Careful speakers follow what the person themselves prefers: some say autistic person, some say person with autism. The letters are only a short label for that range, not a full story of anyone.
