An ascot is a wide band of cloth that a man wears around his neck, loosely folded, tucked inside an open shirt collar. It is dressy in an old, slightly horse-race way. It is not a skinny modern tie, and it is not a winter scarf. You see it at weddings, in old films, and on people who like that look. Though actually, not many men wear one every day now; it reads as formal, old-fashioned, or costume. The name comes from Ascot, a famous in England.
