    Asceticism is the practice — or the belief — of living that hard, bare way: giving up comfort and pleasure, often for religious or moral reasons. It is the -: the path, the system, not just one day’s choice. Historians talk about the asceticism of certain monks. A writer might say a room has an air of asceticism if it is almost empty on purpose. Same family as ascetic, same formal, serious tone.
