An ASBO is an Anti-Social Behaviour Order: an official court order in Britain that tells someone not to go to particular places or not to see particular people. Courts gave them to people found guilty of anti-social behaviour — things like smashing public property on purpose, or violence that makes a neighbourhood miserable. If you did not obey the order, the punishment got sharper, and you could be sent to prison. Newspapers also used the word loosely for anyone they thought was a public nuisance. Though actually England and Wales later replaced ASBOs with other kinds of orders, but the name stuck in everyday British English. It is a UK legal and word, not a Taiwan or American one. People say it as a word, roughly “az-bo.”
