Arty-farty is an , informal British phrase for a person, place, or thing that tries too hard to look interested in art. It says the art-love is show, not real, or that it is silly and . People use it to laugh at galleries, films, clothes, or talk. It is playful but rude; do not say it to someone's face if you want to be kind. Americans more often say artsy-fartsy. Both halves rhyme on purpose: arty means “into art”, and farty is just there to sound comic and a little crude. You will hear it from people who feel left out of the art talk, or who want to cut someone down. It is not a polite essay word.
