Arnhem is a city in the eastern Netherlands, on the Rhine. English speakers mostly know it from the Second World War. In September 1944, British and other allied airborne soldiers landed nearby to take the bridge there, as part of a plan called Market Garden. They met much stronger German forces than they expected; the bridge was not held, and a great many soldiers died or were captured. People still speak of “the bridge at Arnhem” and of the book and film A Bridge Too Far. Though actually, Arnhem is also an ordinary living city — a provincial capital — not only a battlefield. In English the name is usually said roughly ARN-hem.
