An armoire is a tall, heavy piece of furniture with doors — and sometimes shelves or a rail inside — that you hang clothes in. English borrowed the word from French and kept the French look, so it feels a little grand or old-fashioned. People use it when the piece is something you notice: wood, perhaps a mirror, more “furniture” than a plain closet. In everyday American English many people just say wardrobe or closet; armoire turns up in shops, hotels, and writing about antiques. Though actually, it is still just a for clothes, not a special machine. It is not a kitchen for dishes, even if older related words once meant “a place to keep things.”
