Arkansas is a state in the south-central United States, west of the Mississippi River. It is not Arizona — that one is further west, in the desert southwest. Arkansas has rivers, forests, and ; the capital is Little Rock. The name came from the Arkansas River. French speakers wrote Arcansas for a Siouan people there, often identified with the Quapaw. Some people say the name meant “land of people” (from Quapaw) or “people of the south wind” (from Lakota or Dakota); those stories get repeated, but they are probably not the strongest. More likely it is a Siouan tribal name related to Kansa — the same root that gave Kansas its name. Though actually, that is why the two state names look like cousins, even though Arkansas and Kansas do not sit on the same border.
