An ark is a large boat, most the huge boat that, in the Bible story, Noah built to save his family and two of every animal from a great flood. Today, people sometimes use 'ark' loosely for any place or plan meant to protect and save something important, like a seed bank being called a 'doomsday ark' for plants.
