1. 1

Arizona is a state in the southwest of the United States, just north of Mexico. A large part of it is desert — hot, dry land — though it also has mountains and forests. Many tourists go there, and a lot of them come to see the Grand Canyon, a huge deep valley cut by the Colorado River. Phoenix is the capital; Tucson is another city you will hear named with it. People sometimes picture Arizona as only sand and ; that is the , not the whole place. Do not mix it up with Arkansas, a different US state with a similar-looking name.

組成The origin is uncertain. It may come from O'odham alĭ ṣonak, “small spring,” which passed into Spanish as Arizonac and first named an area around a silver-mining camp in Sonora. Another idea is Basque haritz ona, “good oak,” because Basque herders lived in the area and a descendant set up a place called Arizona in Sonora around 1735. A story that it comes from a Nahuatl word *arizuma meaning “silver-bearing” is not believed, and the neat Spanish guess árida zona (“dry zone”) is also not the real source — though people like that story, because Arizona is dry.
